Medical coding lets you build a skilled career serving US healthcare without leaving Pakistan. Billing companies in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad hire coders for US clients, and experienced coders can work remotely.
What does a medical coder do?
A medical coder reads the provider's documentation of a patient visit and translates it into standard codes: ICD-10-CM for diagnoses, CPT for procedures and services, and HCPCS Level II for supplies and drugs. Those codes decide how the practice is paid, so accuracy matters.
Do I need a medical degree?
No. Many successful coders start with a non-medical degree. You do need to learn medical terminology and basic anatomy, and you need strong reading skills in English, because you'll be reading clinical notes all day.
What skills do employers look for?
- Code-set knowledge: confident use of ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS
- Guidelines: knowing the Official Guidelines, not just finding codes
- Attention to detail: coding only what the documentation supports
- Speed with accuracy: most roles have productivity targets
- Certification: many employers prefer or require a credential such as the CPC
How long does it take to become job-ready?
With consistent study of 10–12 hours a week, most beginners are ready for entry-level billing or coding roles in about four to six months. Preparing for a certification exam usually takes another two to three months of focused practice.
A realistic path
- Foundations (4–6 weeks): terminology, anatomy and how the US revenue cycle works.
- Coding (8–10 weeks): ICD-10-CM and CPT with plenty of practice cases.
- Specialise (optional): E/M coding or diagnosis coding in more depth.
- Exam preparation (6–8 weeks): timed practice tests until you consistently finish on time with a passing score.
- Apply: entry-level coder, billing associate and AR roles are common first jobs.
How do I get CPC® certified from Pakistan?
The CPC® credential is awarded by AAPC when you pass its certification exam. AAPC's CPC® course is taught live online by AAPC faculty and includes the exam and practice tests. As AAPC's Strategic Partner in Pakistan, we support students throughout the enrollment process by coordinating batch schedules, payment processing, and access to required books and online learning resources. AAPC provides the training and credentials.
